[This is AU, and completely outside of any storyline either in this community or in any other. It’s just something twisted. So very, very, very twisted.]

Part One:

“I’ll see your fifty, sir, and raise you another fifty.” Mosby reached over to toss the bill into the center of the table. Then he took a thin cigar from the breast pocket of his black brocade vest, and offered it to the man across from him. Mosby shifted, his legs stretching out a bit, without touching the stranger.

The stranger looked up from his cards, long and dark lashes heavy over the clear green eyes. With his right hand, he reached across and took the offered smoke without a smile, but with a nod of his dark head. A shock of longish hair fell over one eye, as he stood, slightly leaning towards the lit match that was offered over. After both cigars were lit, they looked back at their cards, and the stranger spoke, with a heavy accent and a bit of the smoke in his voice.

“Da. I will match you, and raise one hundred dollars. Gold.” The solid gold piece made Mosby smile, and his eyes glittered. For the Confederate who had seen his country’s currency turn worthless after the war, gold was sweeter than honey.

“Well, well. You didn’t tell me, Mr. Romanov, what business your family is in, only that you were here in our fair town to attend to their interests.” Clay rubbed his thumb over the king of clubs, in his hand, and examined the man. Tall, with long legs and strong arms. Romanov had ridden into town on a black and gray horse, with a broad black hat and long black leather duster. Now, across the card table, he was without the hat or the coat, just in the snow white shirt, unbuttoned four down, and a black leather vest, a gold watch chain the only decoration.

“The Romanovs are in many businesses. Copper is my interest, now.”

The Ambrosia Club was nearly empty. Mills was asleep, and a hired gun was dozing in the chair, waiting for Mosby to close up. It was quiet, still, in the rest of Curtis Wells. Clay tossed a few bills on the stack of gold and currency in the center of the table, and then slid the rest of his chips and cash in. Only a hint of a smile played on his lips as he tipped his dark head towards the other man. “I feel lucky tonight, Romanov. I’ll bet everything that you’re bluffing. So what do you say? Winner take all?”

Alexei Romanov didn’t smile. He just lowered his eyes to the cards, and the brought them back up to meet the stare of Clay Mosby. “Nyet. I have no more to risk.” Alexei folded his hand of cards and laid them on the table. Then he took a last drink of the whiskey in front of him.

Mosby smiled, then, and laughed. The guard started awake, and Clay waved, signaling him to leave. Then he turned his attention back to the younger man in front of him. “Let me be the judge of what you have worth risking, friend. Pick up your cards, and let’s play this out.”

“But I have noth…” Romanov began to protest.

“I’ll decide what’s worth betting on. Some things can’t be laid on the table.” Mosby took two puffs on his cigar, and grinned with it in his teeth. His look was almost predatory. “And some things can. Pick up your cards, Mr. Romanov. Indulge me.”

Alex in Curtis Wells spells all kinds of nasty trouble, no?

Pre-Revolution Romanovs, that would be lovely. The gowns and the clothes, the horses...

Alex and Call could get nasty, fighting over the pretty blonde schoolteacher in town?

Ahahaha! One of those tents outside town could have one very dirty, very drunk cowboy that looks like Mills.

Oh, so many lovely possible scenes.

*g* Alex corners Jane in Twyla's. Poor runaway Riene, caught and trapped.

That dirty cowboy with long hair. Like Luthor.

Now, if Dish came to town...?

Almost calling it a night... and what a note to go to sleep on. This is just wonderful. I'm ever so glad inspiration struck. As much as I love Tom Andrews... Alex would have been a whole lot more fun in Curtis Wells... hell, Alex is more fun everywhere.

*hugs on you*

Alex in Curtis Wells is a whole lot of nasty fun, I think. Maybe our Jane is really Riene, hiding out from the Romanovs? *eg*

Alex on a horse, with his black hat and black leather coat? Mmmmmm...

I love the possibilities.

Now...if there were wolf sightings? ;)
